Apophysitis
Children who are suffering from heel pain may have a condition called apophysitis in which there is irritation of the heel growth plate.
The condition usually occurs in girls from ages 10 to 12 and in boys from ages 12 to 15. In a child, this condition causes pain and
tenderness at the lower back portion of the heel. The heel is often tender to the touch but not obviously swollen.
Causes of Apophysitis
Excess activity often worsens the pain. Repetitive stress and muscle strain in the growth plate of the heel causes inflammation which irritates the heel.
Treatment of Apophysitis
In treating this condition, follow these instructions twice a day; once in the morning and once in the evening:
- Ice then stretch then ice again.
- Make sure to do the stretching exercises with your shoes on.
Over the counter anti-inflammatory agents such as aspirin, Tylenol, Motrin, or Aleve may be used once a day to reduce inflammation and pain.
